A good microfiber beach towel earns its keep for years, but only if you treat it right. The fabric that makes it sand-free and fast-drying is also a little more particular than cotton about how it's washed, and one common laundry habit quietly wrecks its performance. Here's how to keep your La Toalla towel shaking off sand and drying fast for every beach season to come.
The one thing to never do: skip the fabric softener
This is the single most important rule, and it surprises most people. Fabric softener coats the microfiber strands in a waxy residue. That coating is exactly what kills the two things you bought the towel for: it clogs the fine weave that lets sand fall away, and it blocks the fibres from wicking water, so your "quick-dry" towel starts drying like an ordinary one. If you take away nothing else from this guide, take this: no softener, ever, on a microfiber towel.
Washing
Machine wash in cool or warm water, never hot. High heat can damage the fine microfiber strands over time and shorten the towel's life. A gentle or normal cycle is fine, and there's no need for a separate load. You can wash your beach towel with other similar fabrics, just keep it away from anything with Velcro or zips that could snag the weave.
Use a small amount of regular detergent. You don't need anything specialised, and a fragrance-free or sensitive-skin detergent is a good option if you're using the towel for kids.
Drying
Microfiber's whole advantage is speed, so drying is quick either way. Tumble dry on low heat, or skip the machine entirely and air dry: in UAE heat, a rinsed microfiber towel is often dry within an hour or two on a balcony or washing line. Avoid high heat in the dryer for the same reason as washing; it can wear the fibres down faster than they need to.
Rinse after saltwater and sunscreen
Seawater, sunscreen, and chlorine can build up in the weave over repeated beach days. A quick rinse in fresh water before it goes in the wash (or even just a shake and a hang-dry between uses) keeps the towel performing at its best and stops any residue from setting in.
Storage
Because microfiber packs down so small, it's tempting to stuff a slightly damp towel straight into its pouch after a beach day. Give it a few minutes to air out first if you can, then fold and store somewhere dry. If it does go away a little damp, unpack and air it out as soon as you're home so it doesn't sit closed up and musty.
A quick FAQ
Can I use fabric softener just once?
No. Even one wash with softener leaves a coating that's difficult to fully strip back out, and you'll notice the sand-shedding and quick-dry performance drop off straight away.
Will my towel shrink?
Quality microfiber is very shrink-resistant when washed as above (cool or warm water, low heat). Avoid high heat and it will hold its size and softness wash after wash.
How often should I wash it?
After every few uses is plenty for a beach towel used for drying off. Rinse and air-dry between uses if you're at the beach several days in a row and don't want to wash that often.
Can I tumble dry it every time?
Yes, on low heat, but air drying is just as fast in UAE weather and is gentler on the fibres over the towel's lifetime.
